In has been over a year since KEVIN ALLWOOD began developing ideas of how to collaborate with the ETHICAL FASHION INITIATIVE which works in both areas of East and West Africa, as well as Haiti to promote sustainable and ethical production of clothing fabrics and accessories. The goal was to work together, as the EFI does with many successful global brands such as Stella McCartney, Osklen and Stella Jean to name a few...to partner on elevating the standard of working conditions in these parts of the world, by creating beautiful new products.
Designer Kevin Allwood is originally from Jamaica, born in Kingston, thus the idea of working with a neighbouring country like Haiti - which has suffered such destruction in the 2010 Earthquake, was an immediate yes. He works with the hands-on EFI team in Haiti which also collaborates with Dot.Haiti (a Donna Karan initiative) to produce various samples of beaded mallas and bracelets as well as handbags made from all natural materials.
The goal is to create beautiful pieces, and in doing so, employing artisans to create these in an ethical, safe, clean and beautiful environment. It is about work, not charity. Giving people the opportunities to go beyond their current limitations - and to create new products with love as this is so lost in the current state of the fashion industry.
We have had the first selection of beaded bracelets at KASPACE since November and the response has been overwhelming. Kevin Allwood has adorned each piece with his favourite abundant symbols / charms to give even more good energy to the person wearing.
We are looking forward to the upcoming collections this fall.
